How yeddi rose to the gaddi (Yeddyurappa history)
Reaping a golden harvest for the BJP in Karnataka, B S Yeddyurappa gave wings to the long cherished dream of his party. Known to be a fighter all through his political career, Bookanakere Siddalingappa Yeddurappa was born on February 27,1943 at Bookanakere in Mandya taluk. After completing graduation in Mandya, he joined the department of social welfare as a second division clerk.
His efforts at work and sincerity caught the attention of Veerabhadra Shastri, a rice mill owner from Shikaripura who took him as an employee at his mill. Later, he married the owner’s daughter Mytradevi and settled at Shikaripura along with his family of two sons Raghavendra, Vijayendra and three daughters Arunadevi, Padmavati and Umadevi.
Balancing between work at the rice mill and RSS, yeddyurappa’s entry into active politics came in 1972 when he became the president of the Shikaripur taluk Jansangh. Since then, Yeddyurappa has been fighting for the cause of farmemers across the state. He went on to became the president of the Janasangh, member of the municipality and Shimoga district BJP president.
His efforts won him the post of the party’s state president for two consecutive years. Acclaimed for his fiery speeches on the floor of the House as an opposition leader, Yeddyurappa was elected as the MLA from Shikaripur for the sixth successive term and twice became the opposition leader in the legislative assembly. With the BJP-led coalition government with JDS assuming the power, he went on to become the deputy chief minister and late the chief minister of Karnataka only to pulled down by his partner in the coalition.
